As we head into the new season, we expect to see some new faces making the roster and we should also expect to see new numbers. Some players that are veterans after being rookies or have solidified their roster spots may wish to change their numbers. Some numbers have no or little appeal, the number "13" comes to mind. Many North American players consider it to be unlucky. On the other hand many European and Russian players would wear the number proudly. One of the two single digit numbers available on the Bruins seems to have an unlucky history, the number "6". Ted Green, Gord Kluzak, Glen Featherstone and recently Corey Potter and Greg Zanon all wore "6" and some saw their careers shortened by significant injuries or had their time as Bruins cut short. If I were a new roster player, I'd stay away from number "6". We haven't seen a goaltender wear number "1" since Andrew Raycroft. That being the other single digit number.
We have the number 10,12,13,14,16 and 19 available. In the 20's we have 22, 26, 28 and 29 available. The 30's have 30, 31, 32, 35, 36 and 39. The 40's have 41 ,42, 48 and 49. The 50's have 50, 52, 53, 56, 58 and 59 available. The 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's have all numbers available except 63, 72, 77, 86 and 99. However you may see Svedberg number 72, Ryan Spooner number 51 and Miller number 86 ask for lower numbers.
Some notable Bruins had number switches. Bobby Orr originally had 27 and switched to 4. Ted Donato and Steve Heinze had numbers 47 and 48 and switched to 21 and 23 when they became available. Joe Thornton switched from unlucky number 6 to 19 on request. So it's not without expectation that players may switch.
Once upon a time, the norm was for Goalies to have the numbers 1 or 30 and if injured players came in, the goalies wore numbers 31-35. Defensemen wore the numbers 2-6 and additionals started at 20-25. Forwards started at 7-12, skipped 13, 14-19 and additionals were 26-29. This now is rarely seen and might only happen on an expansion team.
For the Bruins, I expect the numbers 6, 12, 19 and 22 to lay dormant awhile as the previous owners had recently vacated and the Bruins might wish to have some memories fade for a time.
Anyone have thoughts on any player and number changes or assignments as the new season starts??
Until Next Time!
