The Bruins season is underway and after the first week of the season there is a lot to talk about. The big stories include David Krejci being injured some rookies getting their chance and the offense struggling to get it going. The Bruins won their first game of the week against the Flyers 2-1 lost to the Wings 2-1 and then lost to the Capitals 4-0. So it's safe to say it was a very up and down week.
The week got off to a rough start as the Bruins learned that top line center David Krejci would miss the first three games of the season. The injury led to the Bruins shuffling their lines which may have contributed to the lack of offense. The Bruins got off to a good start against the Flyers with Reilly Smith scoring an early power play goal but after that the offense cooled off and it took a Chris Kelly goal in the last two minutes to get the win. This would unfortunately be a sign of things to come in the rest of the week as the Bruins would again struggle to score. Another good story of opening night was the debut of Bobby Robins who at 32 is not your conventional rookie but he takes the place of Shawn Thornton and wouldn't you know it Robins got in a fight in his first NHL game. With over 80 fights in his last 3 AHL seasons he knows how to handle himself in a fight and when it can do the most for his team.
The second game of the week was against the Wings in a rematch of the first round of last years playoffs. The Bruins again took the lead early on a goal by Bergeron off of a turnover on the Bruins first shot of the game. The bad news was it took over half the first period to get that first shot. The Bruins struggled to get shots through to Howard all night and were clearly bothered by the speed of the Wings. There was a scary moment as Bergeron was missing from the bench for about five minutes undergoing tests for a concussion but he was able to return and is healthy. The Wings scored two goals in the second period and that was all they needed as they out shot the Bruins 24-17.
In the final game of the week the Bruins would fall to the Capitals 4-0. The game featured defensive breakdowns against the only line on the Caps that you can't give space and it led to two goals by Ovechkin and two power play goals. Fortunately the Bruins offense was much more active actually out shooting the Capitals 29-21 but they just couldn't score. This game really showed how much the Bruins missed Krejci and his ability to almost always find his teammates in a spot to score. The Bruins have gone through stretches in the past where they could shoot 50 times in a game and still struggle to score so it's better to get these games out of the way early and figure out what works best for the rest of the season.
The rookies for the Bruins would probably like to forget their first week in the NHL outside of Cunningham playing well on the penalty kill and Spooner having some good moments of the power play there just was not a lot to be happy about. Through the first three games the rookies have yet to score a point but with Krejci coming back there should be a lot less pressure on them to produce and they can just play their own game which is what got them on the Bruins in the first place. The Bruins have four games in week two so there will be plenty of opportunities to improve. The Bruins will kick off week two against the Colorado who has lost it's first two games both to the Wild so if the Bruins can keep the pressure on them they should be able to pull out a win.
