The Bruins played two pre-season games this past week losing in Montreal 3-2 last Tuesday and winning in Boston against Washington 2-0. Goal scorers in Montreal were Matt Fraser and Ryan Spooner. While Spooner was noticed for his offense in the game, Coach Julien noted that he hadn't been defensively responsible enough during the game and he missed his assignment that lead to Montreal scoring the winning goal with 48 seconds left in the game. Spooner responded with a much better overall game against Washington and is pushing very hard to latch onto one of the open spots at forward on the team. Zdeno Chara scored the game winner late in the third period against the Capitals on the power play and Simon Gagne scored an open net goal to cap the victory the next night.
Other notes: David Pastrnak started skating again after being injured in practice last Saturday, Craig Cunningham, whose had "Mono" is expected to play at least one of the next two games as is Milan Lucic who has been slowly working on getting back to full upper body and wrist strength after off season surgery. Greg Campbell still has a body core injury and hasn't skated at all since camp officially opened. Anthony Camara will sit the next two games with an undisclosed injury. Linus Arnesson is still out with a groin injury.
Ten players were demoted to the Providence Bruins squad on Thursday and one of them Tommy Cross will have to pass through waivers before reporting. The other nine were; Andrew Ammon, Steve Eminger, Rob Flick, Corey Kane, Adam Morrison, Frankie Simonelli, Ethan Werek, Ben Youds and Mike Young.
No updates on Torey Krug and Reilly Smith and it seems to look like they will be ignored totally by the team on less some progress is made in negotiations.
Players that have made initial good impressions to date that are competing for open spots include Spooner, Seth Griffith, Matt Fraser, Brian Ferlan, Matt Lindblad and Alex Khokhlachev as forwards. Adam McQuaid, Zach Trotman and David Warsofski on defense. All the goalies have looked ready to play. Not so good looking, Ville Leino, Jordan Caron, Loui Eriksson, and Simon Gagne. I expect another round of demotions on Sunday or Monday as the roster starts to become more defined and the serious candidates for jobs start getting final looks. Last year the last forward demoted was Matt Lindblad and the last defenseman was Zach Trotman.
Tonight the Bruins play the Washington Capitals again in Washington and tomorrow in Detroit against the Redwings. I do not believe either game will be televised or on the radio as of yet.
I expect Craig Cunningham, Alex Fallstrom, Bracken Kearns, Bobby Robins and Ben Sexton as forwards in the next cut and Chris Casto, Joe Morrow and Chris Breen on defense to be demoted. I think all four remaining goalies will stay through next Thursday at least.
Until Next Time!
