The Boston Bruins beat the New York Islanders last night 6-1 in New Boston,CT. They won behind the efforts of a mostly youthful roster that included call ups Ryan Spooner, Seth Griffith, Alex Khokhlachev, Justin Florek, Zach Trotman and Christopher Breen. It was the first pre-season game for Reilly Smith, Torey Krug and David Pastrnak as well. Malcolm Subban backstopped the game in his first full game as a Bruin. Many veterans didn't dress and those that did, needed to be seen or needed the game experience to get back in game shape.
The Bruins took a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by Spooner and Carl Soderberg. Spooner scored his on the rebound of a Zach Trotman shot from the point and Soderberg potted his off a deflection of an Islanders defender on the power play. The Bruins played with a lot of speed and buzz, but this was the result of half the team being from Providence. The Bruins added to their lead in the second period with a Seth Griffith goal, before Kevan Miller boarded Brock Nelson of the Islanders, earning a 5 minute major penalty and a game misconduct ejection. The Islanders scored their only goal of the game off this advantage. The Bruins put the gas pedal back on in the third period with goals by Smith, Spooner and Dan Paille to finish off Chad Johnson and the rest of the Islanders for the night. Milan Lucic picked up a couple of assists as did Chris Kelly and Khokhlachev. David Pastrnak got his first assist, but at times looked out of place in his first NHL game. Jordan Caron and Chris Breen each got fighting majors and while Breen looked in control of his fight, Caron might just have gotten a precursor of what picking up some of Shawn Thornton's minutes will be like. Smith and Krug, despite missing most of camp didn't look out of place and Lucic seemed reserved and in control, hopefully saving his game for the start of the new season. This was probably the last chance some of these youngsters had to make an impression on the Bruins staff to make the team and there were plenty of good performances to go around by Griffith, Khokhlachev, Spooner and Trotman.
The Bruins finish up their pre-season tonight at 5:30 PM with a game against the Detroit Redwings in Boston. I expect to see a mostly veteran roster back stopped by Tuukka Rask. I'm going to be paying particular attention to what the line combinations are and the defense pairings. It's likely that a few spots will indicate where new faces are likely to be seen. I also expect that Pastrnak will get another game and perhaps we'll be seeing the last appearance of Simon Gagne. I expect Kevan Miller will sit out tonight to satisfy any league suspension requirement for his major penalty last night. Just thinking about odd things, you may see Torey Krug do some time on wing tonight and if there is no spark or chemistry with Eriksson playing with Lucic and Krejci, you may see Matt Fraser move up in the third period and Eriksson play with Soderberg.
Until Next Time !
