In Thursday’s game against the New York Giants there have been speculations that Garoppolo will get the start. “I'm excited about it,” Garoppolo admitted Monday. “It's a good opportunity to get out there and get some quality reps. It's going to be fun.
He has been more than outstanding with every opportunity that he gets. He has completed 24 out of 37 attempts and has recorded 335 total yards with the addition of four touchdowns. He has been making it very hard for the Patriot’s organization to decide who will be quarterback number two.
“I came in with the mindset that I’m going to practice and study as if I was the starter. If you want to be a successful player in this league,” asserted the youngster, “you have to take the mental reps, the physical reps, and take advantage of your opportunities.
“You always want to come in with a good attitude, thinking that you’re going to succeed. Having that mindset really helped out a lot. It’s the opportunity that matters. As long as you get an opportunity, that advantage of that. Just showcase what you can do with the players around you says Jimmy.”
Jimmy has been coming into his own self after training camp. Training camp he looked out of rhythm, could not get accurate passes to his receivers, and at times struggled with what the defense was giving him. That drought ended when he had played the Washington Redskins in their first preseason game.
He read the defense and made them pay every time the Redskins’ defensive coordinator dialed a blitz; when he was pressured he threw the ball out of bounds. He has begun to understand the concept of patience in the NFL, but he is very quick to say that he needs to improve more.
“Washington was a big building block,” Jimmy said. “Just getting in a rhythm with the offense. I’ve got a great group of guys around me, who’ve really made my job a lot easier. Week in and week out I want to improve each and every time I step on the field. “I’m still a rookie. I have long way to go and a lot to learn still,” he was quick to conclude. “That playbook’s pretty thick. If you keep learning day in and day out, you’re on the right track.”
This will be interesting to see what the Patriots will do with this young man’s talent. He is making his statement with his actions on the field and he is only getting better each and every down.
