Ben Cherington and the Red Sox were hard at work late last night as they spent the night meeting with Jon Lester's agent for, what WEEI's Rob Bradford reported was an "extended period of time."
What does this mean? Have the Red Sox changed their philosophy that they felt so strongly about only a few months ago? Or is this just going through the motions, getting a feel for the market, and an attempt to appease the fans?
Odds are they still believe that philosophy, but will make exceptions. However, a Sox fan should hope that they make exceptions on the money side of things instead of the years. Six years to a 30 year old pitcher is a long time.
This could also be a non-story. Free agents meet with teams all the time. Boston will most certainly be just one of many stops for Jon Lester and his agent. There are surely many teams out there, including Theo Epstein's Chicago Cubs, who will also be in the bidding for Lester's services.
