What is a B-Modified? I should say go visit a grassroots track in your area, but most have already closed for the season. A B-Modifed is a car racing in a support class at many dirt tracks around the country. The class has a wide range of driver talent, from very good to really bad. And it has a wide range of equipment too-again, from very good to very bad. This disparity leads to lots of crashes-see where Bowyer and Kahne fit in the puzzle?
On the next to last restart-was it Bowyer or Kahne who caused it, there were so many restarts-Dennis the Menace aka Brad Keselowski once again showed off his talent for driving a 78 ½’ wide car through a 75” wide hole, clobbering Jeff Gordon, flattening a tire on Gordon’s car, and sending the 24 from a possible win to a 29th place finish. Instead of being at the top of the Chase Grid heading to Phoenix, Gordon is in a most precarious 4th place spot and could be shut out from the final Chase round at Homestead, Florida. Back to the movies: remember the scene in the movie Top Gun where the commander is talking with Maverick after the Tom Cruise character helped another pilot land on the carrier? The quote was “son, your ego is writing checks your body can’t cash.” Ah, definitely BK, though I would call Keselowski less Maverick and more oddball.
Ask Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, and Terry Labonte if they liked all of the moves Dale Earnhardt made, and they would say no. Ask those same drivers if they respected Earnhardt, and they would answer yes. Ask Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, and Jeff Gordon if they appreciated on track actions of Keselowski and they would answer with a loud no. Ask them if they respected the driver of the 2 car and the answer would still be no-probably a resounding no.
Since this is the height of the political season-OK, I know that the height of the political season comes 365 days a year anymore, here is one of the most famous quotes from a candidate debate, this during the Vice Presidential debate between Dan Quayle and Lloyd Bentsen. After Quayle likened himself to John Kennedy as a Senator, Bentsen replied "I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." After today, Gordon could say “I raced with Dale Earnhardt. I knew him well. BK, you are NO Dale Earnhardt.”
Keselowski may be an Intimidator Imitator, but that merely makes him a NASCAR Irritator. A long list of drivers are waiting to pay off Keselowski and no, Roger Penske, I don’t think they are jealous of him. At some point this driver’s on track action pass being hard racing-42 other drivers are racing hard every week and don’t seem to have other drivers wanting to punch them after the race-and become the actions of a dip stick. Well, it sounded like Gordon called Keselowski a dip stick. Maybe it was a little more profane. In this Nebraska household either name seems apt.
Thanks for stopping by. Maybe tomorrow I’ll have more comment on this race and on the F1 race at COTA, near Austin, Texas-I watched it during commercials. Way cool.
